Monk Budai (布袋和尚; 포대화상 / Bố Đại Hòa Thượng) is the well known semi-legend historical figure who lived in Later Liang Dynasty (後梁朝代; 후량조대 / Nhà Hậu Lương), during Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms Period of China. He's well known for his merits to spreading Chan (Zen) Buddhism and his looking as a fat and laughing monk, he came to be venerated in East Asian countries like China, Dai Viet (Vietnam), Korea, and Japan and some other countries which influenced by East Asian culture (Sinosphere). And because he used to carry a big cloth sack, people called him "Monk Budai" which mean "Monk Big Cloth Sack". He's also known as Fat Laughing Buddha (胖笑佛; 반소불 / Phán Tiếu Phật, Phật Mập Cười) due to his humorous personality. His date of birth is unknown, just know that he passed away on March 28 917 CE (Lunar calendar).
And due to his role and merits in history, Buddhists honored him as the avatar of Maitreya Buddha (彌勒佛; 미륵불 / Phật Di Lặc), the future Buddha who would succeed Lord Sakyamuni (Amitabha) Buddha to lead and correct Buddhism when the world met its end and begin a new age, despite Lord Maitreya Buddha's true form is a big, tall and handsome man. In East Asian countries like China, Đại Việt (Vietnam), Korea and Japan, people worship him both as a religious figure in Buddhism and a symbol of fortune in folk beliefs. In Buddhism, the image of this fat laughing Buddhist monk represent abundance or forgiveness, get rid all of attachments and afflictions to attain the meditation and enlightenment. However, in folk beliefs, people worship him as one of the symbol of fortune in business, fame, wealth and success in life. But the one of the silliest facts is many Western people in United States, Canada and Europe mistake him as Lord Buddha and keep depict him like this Fat Laughing Monk Budai in many pictures and works in art due to their lack of knowledge about Buddhism.
